FACTS ABOUT TEACHING ELEMENTARY MUSIC

Many elementary music teachers are trained in Orff and/or Kodaly methodologies. Some music teachers are great musicians that find themselves teaching general music without those trainings.

Some music educators are not musically trained and need the basics.

No matter where you are on the spectrum of music education preparation, you share some things in common with all music teachers!

  • Elementary music teachers need sequentially based activities for multiple grade levels.
  • The elementary music teacher plans lessons and activities for multiple grade levels usually Kindergarten through 5th grade.
  • Music education classes are generally one or two times a week for 30-45 minutes.
  • Music educators are expected to have students perform in concerts or music programs several times a year.
  • Usually there is one elementary music teacher at a school.
  • Elementary music teachers are part of the “Special Area” group of teachers.

What other things do you find them to have in common?

To meet the needs of my younger students, I developed a Kindergarten as well as preschool activities that focus on the basics.

My students loved all the train activities.

As a result, I created units for the basic elements I wanted my younger students to get in music class.

MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES

It can be challenging to support learning goals and keep students moving too.

Don’t know how to use movement to teach music concepts?

It’s easy to incorporate one movement type activity into your lessons at a time.

For instance, you may want to begin with body percussion.

Then I added in scarf, parachute, stretchy band, and bean bag activities as well as relay games.

Check out this blog post on why and how to use movement in your classroom.

And, be sure to check out our movement activities.
