Parachute play isn’t just fun — it’s also packed with developmental benefits for children! Whether in a preschool classroom, music and movement session, or outdoor playtime, parachute activities offer a vibrant, engaging way to help children grow.
10 REASONS WHY PARACHUTE MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES ARE FANTASTIC FOR KIDS
Here are 10 reasons why parachute movement activities are fantastic for kids:
1. ENCOURAGES TEAMWORK
Parachute games require kids to work together — lifting, lowering, and coordinating movements as a group. This fosters cooperation, turn-taking, and a strong sense of community.
2. BUILDS GROSS MOTOR SKILLS
Lifting, shaking, and moving the parachute strengthens large muscle groups. Kids practice coordination, balance, and spatial awareness while having a blast!
3. BOOSTS LISTENING AND FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS
Many parachute songs and games include specific instructions (e.g., “Everyone lift on 3!”). These activities improve auditory processing and following multi-step directions.
4. STIMULATES THE SENSES
The bright colors, swooshing sounds, and flowing motion of a parachute provide multisensory stimulation — engaging visual, auditory, and tactile senses all at once.
5. PROMOTES SOCIAL INTERACTION
Parachute play naturally invites interaction. Whether kids are making a “mushroom” tent or switching spots during a song, they learn to engage positively with peers.
6. SUPPORTS EMOTIONAL REGULATION
The rhythmic up-and-down motion can have a calming effect on children. Parachute games help kids release energy in a safe, controlled way, reducing stress and anxiety.
7. INTRODUCES BASIC ACADEMIC CONCEPTS
Many parachute songs involve counting, colors, opposites (up/down, fast/slow), and even early literacy skills. It’s a fun and active way to reinforce classroom learning.
8. ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION
The parachute becomes a storytelling tool — it can be a tent, a wave, a rainbow, or a volcano! Kids get to explore creative movement and imaginative play.
9. INCLUSIVE FOR ALL ABILITIES
Parachute play can be easily adapted for children of all abilities. Everyone can participate, whether standing, sitting, or using assistive devices, making it an inclusive group activity.
10. IT’S JUST PLAIN FUN!
At the end of the day, parachute activities are joyful, exciting, and memorable. Kids love them — and when kids are having fun, they’re more open to learning and connecting.

LESSON STEPS
Listen to the song and bounce the parachute on the beat.
The first part of each verse repeats at the beginning of all consecutive verses.
“The sun come up, the sun goes down”. (Movement is raising high above head, then low to the ground.)
Then a “character” does an action. There are nine verses in the song and each verse has a different parachute action.
The end of each verse is the same and we’ll take a big breath afterwards as we sing “In my little garden”.

TEACHING TIPS
You may want to sing and practice the actions one verse at a time.
Sing the song acapella so that it’s slow enough for the younger children to learn.
Challenge older students in 3rd grade to create their own actions for each verse of the song.
