WHAT IS A SCARF MOVEMENT SONG?
A scarf movement song is a playful and expressive way for children to connect with music through movement. Using lightweight scarves, children can wave, twirl, float, and dance—acting out the lyrics and rhythm of a song. It’s a fun way to explore beat, tempo, and emotion, and it invites children to engage both their bodies and imaginations.
I love using scarf movement in my primary grades. They are a wonderful way for children to make important music and “body” movement connections.
SPRING SCARF MOVEMENT SONG “MY LITTLE GARDEN”

TEACHING “MY LITTLE GARDEN”
You can approach this activity in a few different ways, depending on the age and attention span of your group.
You’ll also want to decide if you want to teach this song and activity over several days or shorten it to just one class time.
Because there are nine verses-you may want to break the activity into three parts.
OPTION 1: TEACH FIRST
- Introduce the song and sing it together.
- Read the lyrics aloud and demonstrate the actions for each verse.
- Have children try the actions along with you before playing the music.
- Practice one verse at a time before moving on to the next.
OPTION 2: JUMP RIGHT IN!
- Play the song and let the children explore scarf movement freely.
- Then pause and gather them to focus on one verse at a time.
- Teach the action, practice it, and then try it with the music.
- Repeat this over several classes until they’ve learned the whole song.
- Give them lot’s of time to move and create their own actions too!
SCARF MOVEMENT IDEAS & CIRCLE GAME
Once the children are familiar with the actions of each verse, you can turn the song into a circle game:
STEP-BY-STEP:
- Gather in a circle and assign children roles based on the characters in the song.
- Group children by verse and seat them in order around the circle.
- Give each group a different colored scarf to represent their character.
- When it’s their verse, that group goes to the middle, performs their movements, and returns to the circle.
- Pause between verses to guide the next group, give reminders, and take deep breaths.
This format gives every child a turn and allows for fun repetition, character expression, and a little pretend play magic.
WHY THIS WORKS
This scarf movement lesson isn’t just about having fun (though it certainly is fun!). It also helps children:
- Feel the beat of the music
- Develop body coordination
- Practice sequencing and memory
- Explore creative expression
- Engage in social interaction through circle play
FINAL TIP: ENJOY THE MOMENT
Take time to savor the joy and wonder on your students’ faces as they wave their scarves and become butterflies, seeds, flowers, or sunshine. Breathe deeply, move slowly, and enjoy the pretend play. This is where learning and imagination truly bloom.
