10 VALENTINE’S DAY MUSIC ACTIVITIES FOR “LOVE SOMEBODY”

In this post I’m sharing 10 different activities you can do using the song “Love Somebody”.

The activities will focus on listening and beat skills. Each activity is a different way for your students to experience music. You can apply these ideas to many songs you may sing in your music classroom.

“Love Somebody” is an easy song to sing with children. Here are the lyrics I’m using.

Love somebody yes I do.

Love somebody yes I do.

Love somebody yes I do.

Love somebody but I won’t tell who!

These 10 activities can be used in different grade levels all the way from Preschool through 6th grade. 6th graders may not like to sing this song- so you can use the activity ideas with a different song that they will enjoy.

You can also combine these activities for a complete music lesson.

For example, PREK & KINDERGARTEN PLAN:

  • SING THE SONG WITH HAND ACTIONS (This would include clapping rhythms, echo singing the melody)
  • MOVEMENT ACTIONS ACTIVITY (#7)
  • SCARF MOVEMENT ACTIVITY (# 3-4)
  • READ A STORY (see my favorite February reads at the end of this post)
  • SING THE SONG AGAIN WITH HAND ACTIONS (Students perform for each other in small groups)

FRIENDSHIP GAME

This game is easy to play. Everyone will need 4 “things”, either a rhythm card, pattern or a Valentine’s Day Card. The goal of the game is to share compliments and build community and friendship.

You can choose to use things in your classroom, or get the free composition cards at my TpT store.

Everyone has their 4 cards and will pass one to someone on the word LOVE!

After singing the song and passing/collecting cards, they will sit down in a group or with a buddy and share the cards they received.

You can turn this into a rhythm or solfege singing game if you use flashcards for those concepts.

You can get the free activity at this LINK TO THE TPT STORE.

BEAN BAG ACTIVITIES

Sing the song as you pass or toss a bean bag.

Reinforce Beat, listening skills.

Toss on the word LOVE.

Second time students will Pass on the word LOVE.

SCARF MOVEMENT

There are 3 different ways to do scarves in this song.

1- TOSS on the word LOVE

2- FLICK on the word LOVE

3- FREE MOVES on the word LOVE

Encourage students to make big moves on the word LOVE.

Have fun!

RHYTHM STICK GAME

Students sit in a circle.

Students tap on the word LOVE.

Pass their rhythm sticks to the LEFT in between verses or repetitions of the song.

Focus on working together and passing so that no rhythm sticks drop.

EGG SHAKERS

This activity is great for the younger students. They will have an egg shaker that they can toss or shake on the word LOVE.

Let them shake fast on the last line of the song “but I won’t tell who”.

MOVEMENT ACTIONS

Students can lead this activity.

Choose an action for the word LOVE, like jump!

Have the students take turns choosing actions and leading the class.

HAND CLAPPING GAME

This activity focuses on the BEAT.

Students can buddy up or have them do patterns like CLAP PAT SNAP CLAP alone.

You can differentiate the difficulty level using different patterns.

CLAP-PAT-CLAP-PAT

CLAP-PAT-CLAP-PAT ACROSS

SING WITH HAND ACTIONS

I know my younger students love to sing songs with their hands.

Use actions like a heart for the word LOVE.

Thumbs up for the word YES.

Cross arms WON’T TELL WHO.

After students learn the song well, divide them into groups and have them perform for each other.

PLAY UKULELE SONG “LOVE SOMEBODY”

If you’re teaching ukulele, then this song will be pretty easy for you to do in your class.

The chords are C and G7 (I V7)

I play on the steady beat.

C C G7 G7 (repeat 3 times)

C G7 C C (last line)

You can add a strum after students can play it on the beat and make the chord changes.
