HOW TO TEACH “FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS” SCARF MOVEMENT

These activities are for Preschool through 3rd grades.  You can do these activities in preschool music class, elementary music class or at home or other music and movement classes.

TEACHING STEPS

The first thing I like to do is to have the children define their personal space.

Then I play the music and have them move freely.

Next, we’ll bounce our scarves on the beat.

Then, we can learn the words or just move on to learning the scarf movement.

Each phrase has a different movement.

I like to include movements that are across the body, up and down and around.  It’s important to include many different actions so that students get a variety of movements.

These movements encourage fine motor muscle as well as gross motor muscle development. These kinds of movements also encourage making brain connections that improve coordination as well as reading skills.

TEACHING TIPS

It’s important to go at the pace of the children.

You may only get through a part of the song during one class time.

If you are teaching PreK and Kindergarten, then you may want to simplify the actions.

I recommend focusing on cross body movements and up and down movements.

Combine those two with bouncing and you can have a lot of fun with this song and a scarf.

After teaching each line, it’s time to put it all together.

Eventually, the children will learn the movements and the lyrics.
