The school year is just about over so here are eight end of year music class activities for the elementary music classroom.

1-SING YOUR FAVORITE SONGS

One activity that many students will love is to sing all their favorite songs learned throughout the year.

Did you do a music program?  These songs are perfect for this activity!

Make a list for each grade level of the songs and chants taught throughout the year.  I’ve found it’s even better if these happen to have games or actions too!

Put all of those materials in your lesson plan format (I use Power Point and Google Slides) by the grade.

You now have songs to sing for end of the year music class activities.

2-PLAY BEAN BAG GAMES

If you’re singing a song, you then can have students play a game.

If you don’t have bean bags, then you’ll want to get some.  Be sure to get enough for every student.

Here is my AMAZON AFFILIATE link to some great bean bags.

Need some bean bags?

  • Throwing, catching, movement games, color recognition, and my kids favorite “bean bag war.”

I begin with my “It’s Time to Say Hello to the Bean Bag” Song.  It’s simple and uses directional words that help students learn right and left.

I wrote this song for my kindergarten students to use because it has RIGHT/LEFT, OVER, UNDER, and other directional words.  It’s also an activity where they don’t let go of the bean bag!

I’ve found this works well for Preschool and Kindergarten students to begin learning about bean bags.

DO THE BEAN BAG TWIST is in the BEAN BAG SONGS AND ACTIVITIES BUNDLE

Or here are a couple of games you most likely know how to play or can easily learn.

1- Hot Potato!  Students sit in a circle. Play music. Students pass a bean bag around the circle. Stop the music after about 15-30 seconds. The student with the bean bag stands up and sits in the middle of the circle.  Instead of that student doing nothing, I place another bean bag in the center and have them play with it.  Then when there are 2-they both toss back and forth.  After there are 5 students in the middle, I start the game over.  You can choose to have students pass on the beat.  Assess the mood of your students to see if this will work.  My experience has been that the last few weeks of school are more about inclusion and positive participation than staying on the beat in this game.

Sing Play Create offers fun bean bag activities!

FIVE REASONS TO PLAY BEAN BAG GAMES IN MUSIC has more activities too that you can use any time of year in your elementary music class and especially at the end of the year.

3-PLAY RELAY GAMES

Relay games are super fun for the upper elementary group.  I’ve had great success at using these types of games at the end of the year.  You can make up music games that are like the relay games the students may play in PE class or in their classroom.

You’ll want to write down your questions before playing the game.  Create a short list for each grade level.

Here’s an easy one.

Divide the class into 2 teams.  Have them line up as far away from the “board” as possible. Place markers and erasers at the board.  They will be running to the board and writing something.

You can choose what you want the students to write!  Categories can be from the lessons you’ve taught throughout the year.

Be sure to ask questions that students will be able to answer.

This isn’t teaching time-or test time.

It’s supposed to be fun.  I recommend not being too tricky!

Draw from the favorite lessons and activities to create the questions.

  • Composers-What composer wrote the music to “STAR WARS?”
  • Rhythm Patterns- Write this pattern (clap the pattern)
  • Notes and Melodies- Write this melody (sing a short phrase)
  • Note Names- What’s the name of the note in the 4th space of the treble clef?
  • Note Values-Which note get’s 2 beats?
  • Musical Terms-What term tells me to play loudly?
  • Even playing something on an instrument- play “do” on the xylophone
  • You can also use flashcards and have the students write or say what they see!
  • You can use rhythm cards, power points, videos, listening activities…keep thinking!

Relays for upper elementary are also a way to assess students during end of the year music class activities.

No matter what, relays are a wonderful way to stay in the “music zone” and still play games.

4-FREEZE DANCE FOR END OF YEAR MUSIC ACTIVITIES

Here are three end of year Freeze Dance activities for grades K-3. Freeze dance is best used for short periods of time and with other music activities.

You may want to begin class review all the favorite chants of the school year.

Next break out the FREEZE DANCE activities!

Animals Move and Freeze

Space Move and Freeze

Dinosaur Freeze Dance

Then you’ll want to do a quiet activity like coloring, listening and even scarves work well for calming down.

5-COLORING ACTIVITIES

If your students like to color, then you’ll want to get this FREE RESOURCE from the Teacherspayteachers store.

6-SCARF ACTIVITIES

Scarf activities are great for the end of the year music class activities.

There are scarf activities for Animals, Space and Dinosaurs as well as

SUPERHERO SCARF ACTIVITY

OCEAN FRIENDS SCARF ACTIVITY

SPRING CREATURES SCARF ACTIVITY

7-ACTION SONGS FOR END OF YEAR MUSIC ACTIVITIES

It seems like every year and every grade is different.  What may work one year in kindergarten, doesn’t work the next-

So if you have a group who loves to sing, then action songs may be a great choice for you.

I AM A DINOSAUR

DANCE TO THE FOUR SEASONS

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY

WHAT DO THE FARM ANIMALS SAY?

SPRING TIME DANCE

8-READ A BOOK
