Five parachute music and movement activities K-5 ideas! In today’s post I’m sharing five music activities you can use to learn music concepts.

I’m using classical music in this teaching tutorial to teach beat, fast/slow, loud/soft, a story song and a calm down activity using games and movement with the parachute.

5 PARACHUTE MUSIC AND MOVEMENT ACTIVITIES

These five activities can be used in a classroom or at home. They can be used with the small parachute or a large one.

PODCAST

If you’re looking for a parachute, then you’ll want to head on over to BEAR PAW CREEK MOVEMENT PROPS

Or you can check out some of these products on AMAZON (use my affiliate link)

STEADY BEAT ACTIVITY

Place beanie babies or bean bags on top of the parachute.

Play a musical selection with a strong beat and try to get the balls or animals to bounce on the beat.

Use a variety of selections with various tempos for children to experience finding the beat by listening.

FAST & SLOW Radetsky March (STRAUSS)

SLOW ELEPHANT (CAMILLE SAINT SAENS)

FAST HUNGARIAN DANCE NO. 5 (BRAHMS)

These songs are on my PARACHUTE ACTIVITIES PLAYLIST on SPOTIFY

MOVE TO A STORY

“Grizzly Bear Song”

The children hold the parachute and the Bear is under the parachute sleeping in the cave.

Walk in a circle as you sing the song.

STOP: IF YOU WAKE- and wiggle

IF YOU SHAKE- wiggle bigger

He gets very MAD- super high as it comes down sit down.

Bear comes out (as the parachute lifts) and roars and tags a student to be the next bear.

LOUD AND SOFT DYNAMICS GAME

Everyone holds the parachute while sitting on the floor.

Teacher or parent plays a loud or a soft sound using instruments, or things around the house.

Students respond to loud and soft using the parachute. Big movement is LOUD. Small movement is SOFT/QUIET.

FAST AND SLOW GAME

Use a variety of musical selections to have students show fast and slow.

Be sure to clarify how to play fast and slow before the game begins.

Remind everyone to play nicely and to not move so wildly that their neighbor can’t hold onto the parachute.

Brahms Hungarian Dance is an excellent piece to use as it varies in tempo. (This song is also on the playlist link above).

Play a short section of the music for students to hear and then discuss.

Is is fast like a RABBIT?

Is it slow like a TURTLE?

GAME FOR FORTE AND PIANO

Here’s another game for loud and soft or forte and piano.

Use a Beanie Babie animal and ask if it makes a loud or soft sound.

Allow students to make the animal sounds as they move the parachute.

Under the parachute is the woods or pond- depending on your animal choices.

If the children can hold the parachute up, then have some of them be the animals underneath the parachute.

When the music stops, choose another animal and the children choose new animals.

Musical selections from “The Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint Saens. (On the Playlist)

You may want to check out our “Carnival of the Animals” scarf activity with all of the music included with the lesson and activities.

PARACHUTE CALM DOWN ACTIVITY

After playing games it’s a good idea to have a calm down activity.

Try creating a mood in the classroom by dimming the lights and asking students to sit down or slowly sit down during the activity.

“Morning Mood” by Edvard Grieg (See Playlist) is a nice calm piece of music.

Focus on moving HIGH AND LOW and deep breathing.

Connect breathing with the movement- this will help everyone calm down.

Parachute music activities can be another way to help your children learn music concepts. By diversifying your activities, you can reach all learners in the classroom and at home.
